mitt romney, debate and what debate? oh, right. wednesday. the first presidential debate. we got a rigorous macro economic lesson that day. but by the end of the week, the only number that mattered was 7.8. that's because the unemployment rate released yesterday is the lowest since 2009. the bureau of labor statistics announced fresh revisions for the summer jobs numbers. in fact, july and august saw a combined increase of 86,000 more jobs than were originally reported. and the household survey showed is an exceptionally strong month with 873,000 more employed americans last month than in july. president obama was back on the trail yesterday trying to temper his enthusiasm. >> today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> mr. romney, of course, saw it a little differently. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. >> good try but actually this month, the rate fell be

allow governor romney to set the debate or control the debate or use facts that aren't real. he needs to sit there and look governor romney in the eye and say listen. you sit there and tell the american people they're not better off. tell the 5 million people that have jobs today that they're not better off. tell the 37 million people who have health care and are going to have health care that they're not better off. tell the soldiers that are coming back from iraq, back from afghanistan that they're not better off. the president needs to do a full throated defense of his presidency and not allow governor romney to define his presidency for him. this helps significantly. >> and, chris, quickly do we hear mitt romney continue to say that president obama doesn't understand the economy? does this put him in a box? >> well, to some extent but governor romney is going to use his statistics to paint his picture and we saw that. and i think this is one of the things that i would, you know, strongly recommend to the obama campaign. romney was a blizzard of statistics in that debate but

economically. a little uptick in optimism. romney free debate had a lot of convincing to do. likability was more in obama's favor. romney may have dictated a bit of the obama strategy such as it was during the debate and the issue of campaign competence. both had so many unforced errors more so in their romney column than the obama column until denver this past week. in this highly polarized environment both campaigns have strategically been appealing to their respective political bases. what is unusual about this election cycle is most voters have picked sides early and lead to our polling right after the convention. looks like the final weekend of the campaign. they tell us they are firmly committed to their candidate and the number of undecided voters has been surprisingly very low. single digits. it is not about persuasion. it is about mobilization. both of the conventions were like that. in the next few weeks we will see a lot about mobilizing folks to come out particularly because of early voting which has started in so many states. the middle is shrinking as far as these campaign

underwhelming performance in wednesday' debate. and bad news for mitt romney, and his conspiracy-minded supporters on the republican right. more on that in a moment. according to the bureau of labor statistics, unemployment dropped to 7.8% last month down .3 of a percent since august. employers added 114,000 new jobs. including 104 in the private sector and 10,000 in the public sector which had seen months of steady decline. in july's number revised to 181,000 with an additional 40,000 new jobs. president obama shared the news with a cheering crowd at a campaign appearance in fairfax virginia. >> obama: this morning we found out that the unemployment rate had fallen to its lowest level since i office. but today's news certainly is not an excuse to try to talk down the economy to score a few political points. it's a reminder that this country has come too far to turn back now. >> eliot: not if you're mitt romney. the g.o.p. contender talked down the jobs numbers and the economy at an abingdon, virginia, rally. >> romney: there were fewer new jobs created this month than last month. the u

incumbent campaign. i think romney, if i was just to, you know, know one is asking for my advice. ly say that you see him coming toward the debate his campaign is coming toward the debate. and i think one of those challenges at the -- i'm going it talk about both campaigns. i want to keep it even-handed here. one of the challenges the romney campaign is going to have the criticism is that he's not connecting. right, you hear that a lot. he doesn't connect. what's wrong with mitt romney and actually, i don't know he seems like a nice enough guy. he was my governor for awhile and i thought hef competent in massachusetts. one things he hasn't done in connecting it's not like he not connecting with people. i know, that. the thing that is going on, he's not been able to say why his time at bain would make him ready for president and that's the connection that i think people are not seeing, and he can get warm and talk about roses on the mother's bedside table like at the convention. it's moving. until he starts connecting in that way, i think he's going continue to struggle on the front.
